Podiatry Q & A

What is a podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) who treats the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.

How are podiatrists trained?

Podiatrists undergo similar training to that of any other physician. They must complete four years at a podiatric medical school, followed by three years of residency in a hospital. Some podiatrists also pursue a fellowship after residency. Like other doctors, podiatrists can become specialized in specific areas, including surgery, pediatrics, sports medicine, wound care, and diabetic care.

To become board-certified, podiatrists must pursue advanced training, clinical training, and take a specialized exam offered by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery or the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Walt Ellis, founder of St. Cloud Foot and Ankle Center is a board-certified podiatrist.

Why should you go to a podiatrist?

The foot is a highly complex part of the body, responsible for supporting, stabilizing, and moving the human body. There are 26 different bones in the foot, as well as 33 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Your feet, therefore, require special care by a doctor who is thoroughly educated in this region.

Podiatrists complete rigorous training focused entirely on the foot and ankle, and are therefore highly qualified to treat them. Podiatrists also tend to take a more conservative approach and focus on non-surgical treatments before pursuing more invasive options.

Because podiatrists study the biomechanics of the foot, they are uniquely qualified to fit patients with orthotics, braces, and custom shoes.

For anyone who needs the skill of a doctor specializing exclusively on conditions of the foot and ankle, contact the professionally-training podiatrists at St. Cloud Foot and Ankle Center in the Central Minnesota cities of St. Cloud, Melrose, Paynesville, and Becker.
